A Riverfront City With Deep Roots
Trenton is one of the oldest settlements Downriver. It started in 1834 as Truaxton, was renamed Trenton in 1850, and became a city in 1957. For much of its history, life here centered on the Detroit River: docks, steamboats, lumber and, later, industry. The river is still a big part of town. Elizabeth Park, on the former Slocum's Island, was donated to Wayne County in 1919 and became Michigan's first county park. The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge's visitor center sits on the Trenton waterfront too. Neighborhoods grew out from the river and the West Jefferson Avenue downtown over the decades. Some older homes stand closer to downtown and the water, and a large share of the city's housing was built in the post-war years, when Downriver industry was booming and families were moving in.
Why Trenton Bathrooms Are Worth Saving
Many Trenton homes still have the bathroom they were built with, and that's often good news. Original porcelain tubs and ceramic wall tile from that era were made to last. What wears out is the surface: the glaze turns dull and rough, stains won't scrub out, chips show up around the drain, and colors like pink, green, blue or yellow have fallen out of style. Tearing all of that out means demolition, new plumbing, retiling and a bathroom you can't use for a while. Refinishing keeps the solid fixtures and gives them a clean, modern surface instead, for a fraction of what replacement costs.
My Refinishing Process
1. Inspect and quote. I look at the tub, tile or shower and tell you honestly whether refinishing makes sense. 2. Deep clean and prep. Old soap film, oils and residue are removed, and the surface is prepared so the new coating can bond. 3. Repair. Chips and small damaged spots are filled and smoothed. 4. Mask and spray. Everything around the work area is protected. Then a chemically bonded finish goes on with an HVLP sprayer for an even, glossy coat. 5. Clean up. I leave your bathroom tidy and explain how to care for the new finish. The finished surface won't peel, chip or flake. I bring more than five years of refinishing experience and three years as a professional painter to every project. Read more on the bathtub refinishing page.
