Bathtub Refinishing & Reglazing in Wyandotte, MI
We serve Wyandotte homeowners, and it's easy to see why this city is a good fit. This is one of the oldest cities Downriver, and many of its homes still have the original porcelain tubs, clawfoots and tile they were built with. Fresh Start Refinishing helps Wyandotte homeowners keep those solid, old fixtures and give them a clean new finish.
A City Built by Industry, Full of Character Homes
Wyandotte grew up along the Detroit River as an industrial town. It was home to the Eureka Iron Works, and later to Edward Ford's Michigan Alkali Company. The wealth and jobs from that era left the city with a remarkable collection of older homes. Walk down Biddle Avenue and you'll pass the 1896 Ford-MacNichol Home, a Queen Anne that's now the main house museum of the Wyandotte Museums and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Next to it are the Italianate Marx House and the 1908 Burns House, an American Foursquare. Across the street, the 1897 Ford-Bacon House is part of the Bacon Memorial Library. On side streets like Vinewood, Oak, Walnut and Chestnut, you'll find Queen Annes, foursquares and bungalows from the late 1800s through the 1920s. Neighborhoods farther from the river were mostly built in the decades after.
The Bathrooms Inside Those Homes
Homes from that era came with bathrooms built to last: porcelain tubs, clawfoot tubs and real ceramic tile. Those fixtures are worth keeping. Getting an old tub out of a century-old bathroom can mean tearing out plaster and tile, and a new tub rarely has the same character. What wears out is the surface. The glaze gets dull and porous, stains set in, and chips appear around the drain and the rim. Refinishing fixes the surface and keeps the tub. It's also a great fit for vintage colored tubs in mint, pink, blue or yellow, and for original wall tile you'd like to brighten without retiling.
How I Refinish Wyandotte's Older Tubs
Older porcelain needs careful prep. I deep clean the tub, take care of chips and rough spots, and mask off fixtures, tile edges and floors. Then I spray a chemically bonded finish with HVLP equipment. The bond keeps the new surface from peeling, chipping or flaking, and the low-pressure spray gives a smooth, even gloss that suits a classic tub. Clawfoot tubs can be refinished inside and out, and the exterior can be done in a color that suits your bathroom. To be upfront: older clawfoots sometimes need rust or body repair before they can be refinished. I'll check for that during your free quote so there are no surprises. I can refinish nearly any tub, including fiberglass, acrylic, ceramic and porcelain. With more than five years of refinishing and three years as a professional painter behind me, I treat older homes with care: tidy masking, clean work areas and respect for your space. Wyandotte FAQ
My old tub has chips that show dark spots underneath. Can that be fixed? Usually, yes. Chips are filled and smoothed during prep, then covered by the new bonded finish, so the tub looks uniform again. Can you keep a vintage look instead of going plain white? Yes. Some Wyandotte homeowners want a fresh white, and others want a color that fits the age of the house. We'll talk through options during your free quote. Do you serve the cities around Wyandotte? Yes. We serve Wyandotte, Southgate, Riverview, Lincoln Park, Allen Park, Trenton and across Downriver. Is it worth refinishing a clawfoot tub I found at a salvage yard or that came with the house? Often, yes. Clawfoots have a lot of charm, and refinishing can bring one back to life. I'll look it over first for rust or body damage and tell you honestly what it needs before any work starts.
